Working in a language in which you can describe emotions precisely may make it easier to discuss personal experiences and expectations.
Living in Italy can be rewarding and still feel psychologically demanding. Relocation, work, study, relationships and distance from familiar support may create stress even when the move was freely chosen. Speaking to a psychologist in English can offer a space to describe these experiences without having to translate every emotional nuance into Italian.
What an initial consultation is for
An initial meeting is not a commitment to a long course of sessions. It is an opportunity to discuss:
what has led you to seek support now;
how the difficulty affects everyday life;
what you would like to understand or change;
whether in-person or online meetings are appropriate;
fees, frequency, confidentiality and data protection;
whether the psychologist’s competence matches your needs.
You do not need a diagnosis or a perfectly organised story before getting in touch. The psychologist should explain the proposed service in clear language and give you enough information to make an informed decision.
How professional titles work in Italy
In Italy, psychologist and psychotherapist are regulated titles and are not interchangeable. A psychologist must be registered with the professional Board. Practising psychotherapy requires additional recognised postgraduate training and a corresponding annotation in the professional register.
It is appropriate to check a professional’s registration and ask directly which service is being offered. Training in a psychotherapy school does not, on its own, mean that the professional has already obtained the title of psychotherapist.
Language matters, but it is not the only factor
A systematic review of bilingual psychological work suggests that using a client’s preferred language may support disclosure and the working relationship. However, the evidence base is limited and individual preferences differ. Relevant competence, clear boundaries, practical sustainability and a collaborative relationship remain equally important.
Marco Zuccon provides psychological consultations in English. I'm registered with the Order of Psychologists of Tuscany, no. 11095, and see clients in Via Bonifacio Lupi 14, Florence, and online. In-person consultations are currently listed at €60 and online consultations at €50.
